Information

Clean up Prostate Cancer

is
a very personal attempt to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer by collecting street rubbish.

This is a self funded project. None of the money received in donations is used for the project, it is all forwarded to Prostate Cancer UK. I do not provide facilities for online donations, however, links to reputable sites where donations can be made are shown.

Predominantly, I collect rubbish in the South of Lancashire and surrounding areas in England. I liaise with local councils so that collected waste is cleared and disposed of in the correct manner.

Frank Farrington

Frank was a deeply respected colleague whose imaginative skills as an engineer were renown. His workshop was a treasure trove which his knowledge extended far beyond its walls. He was also one of those people who took enormous interest in the World and when you were talking with him you had his full attention. Sadly he learned he had Prostate Cancer when it was too far advanced for successful treatment. Many people will remember Frank with great fondness and respect.

This is Frank Farrington, better known to vintage bike collectors and restorers as 'Radco', author of 'The Vintage Motorcyclist's Workshop'. Visit http://www.vintagenorton.com/2012/07/frank-farrington-alias-radco-and-his.html for an insight.

Big boys out on the road

I had a really good afternoon at Bickerstaffe, close to Jct 3 of the M58. As well as collecting 2 bags of rubbish I met Wendy and her family travelling home. She took one of the 3 leaflets I handed out. Another went to the taxi driver who told me he was scheduled for a PSA check. Hope all went well.

The guys from Booths Haulage, Scarisbrick gave me some serious toots and waves from their vintage lorries heading off to a meet. These wagons were the real thing, genuine big boys toys.

Men United

Signed up as a supporter at Men United which is the fundraising arm of prostatecanceruk.org. They asked me to circulate the following message to all my friends. I'm happy to do so. They have made massive steps in gathering together the force of the community in fighting the disease. Visit the site and be impressed by the range of events they are organising. They offer the opportunity for you to publicise your own activity, to join in organised events or to support both of these by making a donation. There diary will tell you when something is happening near you. Please do support them, every small action is bring us closer to preventing men losing their lives to Prostate Cancer.

"I’m proud to be part of Men United and helping to beat prostate cancer, a disease that kills one man every hour in the UK. I think men are worth fighting for - so I’m telling all my friends about it. Please join me."

You will find the link to Men United and Prostate Cancer UK conveniently displayed in Worth a visit.

Boxes ticked

Really good time in Westhead with all boxes ticked this afternoon.
  • Hubcap - Yes.
  • Toot - Yes.
  • 2 bags collected - Yes.
  • Odd item - pyjama bottoms - Yes.
  • Truly annoying - polystyrene - Yes.
  • Wonderful reaction from the Halton Castle - Yes. Happy to display the poster I offered, supplied by men united. Big like.

No rhyme or reason for a pair of pyjama bottoms landing on a grass verge, no where near any housing on the road between Westhead and Ormskirk. Can't help the mind wandering, creating bizarre scenarios. Maybe this is how Monty Python, the Goons and Mork and Mindy started out. Or maybe not.

In Memory

Litter picking throws up real surprises at times. A touching moment from my collection on Turnpike Rd, Aughton was Pete and Bab's memorial to Smartie who died on the 4th May. RIP

Notice I attach to collected rubbish

This notice is attached to bags after they are filled. There are rules about how street litter should be disposed of. I cannot put it in my own rubbish bin as it is not household refuse. I cannot take it to the Lancashire County refuse and recycling sites for the same reason. My very helpful contact at West Lancashire District Council arranges for the bags to be collected by his team. They are usually very prompt and pick bags up within 24hrs of receiving my email. Occasionally delays do happen, I hope concerned citizens are not too inconvenienced or perturbed when this occurs.

Firsts

This is the very first bag of rubbish collected for Clean up Prostate Cancer. It was collected on Northway, Aughton, Lancashire on 7 June 2015.

What an eye opener this new venture is. The pair of Calvin Kleins, the deflated football, the still wrapped Happy Meal toys as well as the laughing gas canisters made for an interesting bagful. Innocent or what, I didn't even know what the canisters were until I Yahooed them. Really good afternoon but I would have loved for at least one toot from passing traffic.
